About the Moon - Lunar Wisdom

The ancients used the moon and her phases as a doorway into life's mysteries. In ancient matriarchal societies the moon was seen as the symbol of the feminine principle and was worshiped as the Goddess, Great Mother and Muse. The return of the worship and study of the moon is an indication of the need in our society for a return to being in tune with nature's cycles, for emotional well being, and practical timing in our everyday lives.

The word for moon, in Latin is mensis and in Greek it is mene, both meaning month, and to measure, from which menstruation, menopause, month, Monday and mind originated. Also in Latin the word for moon, Luna, forms the origin of the words lunacy, lunatic and 'loony'. And we all know how people tend to act on the full moon.

Astrologically the moon represents your unconscious, instinctive inner world of personal emotional needs. The moon is an indication of our ever-changing moods and what you need to feel secure. Understanding your moon sign can give you insight into the less conscious parts of yourself, and what gives you comfort and security. The sign your moon is in shows how you respond and adapt to life experiences. It also describes your style of intimacy and what you need to feel nurtured in your relationships. Since out first experience of intimacy was with our mother, where our moon is in our chart shows how you experience or see your mother. Astrologically the moon rules the stomach, breast, ovaries and our bodily fluids. It is said in Holistic Medicine that our emotional states are connected with our bodies. It is therefore important to understand the relationship between what we feed ourselves emotionally and physically and how it affects our emotional and physical health. In Jungian psychology the moon is the anima, the soul, the mother archetype, our connection with the past, the personal unconscious and one's family's historical roots. In the charts the fourth house, along with the planetary aspects to the moon shows us the best way to integrate our past and find our inner roots.

The placement of the Moon in your chart shows your intimacy needs and relationship style. The Moon is the way you want to be nurtured and the way you nurture. The sign in which the Moon falls in our chart tells about your particular style of nurturing others, as well as the kind of nurturing you need from those who care for you. Your Moon Sign is a major part of your personality. It is your feminine or receptive nature. It shows how you react in emotional situations.
